Artistically exploring his Shawnee heritage was a recurring theme. In doing so, Gibson would explore the idea of, “putting past and present together in various combinations.” A particularly vivid memory he drew upon was a Shawnee dance his father took him to when he was around 7. He noticed how people were both in traditional clothes and in everyday clothes. “I still remember the drumming,” he recalled in an interview.
